Hey guys,

Just graduated from professional school and some family members have decided that they want to chip in for buying me a nice watch as a grad present. I have no idea where to start! What kind of things do you look for in a nice watch? The nicest thing I have so far is a Hamilton, which was a present also. Where to begin?!

see if you can go with at minimum a stainless steel case and a saphire crystal. The swiss tend to be highly regarded for their watch making skills, so keep them in mind. keep complications to a minimum as they just clutter up the face of the watch.

Try to get a Rolex as they maintain their value or can even appreciate

If you're going with a "nice" watch, make sure you find something that is thin and has a simple face. I would also stick with a leather strap as opposed to a steel bracelet.

But, as to brands, as mentioned above, we need a price range.

I dissagree with the sticking to a leather strap, as they wearout in about 1 to 2 years if the watch in question is worn as a watch and not a decorative bracelet for special events. The leather absorbs all the sweat from your wrist darkens and begins to break down. Stainless steel on the other hand looks good for much longer. And makes you look more athletic then you might other wise look.

In regards to Rolex, while they are excellent watches, they tend to be more expensive then comparable watches from competitors.

personally I like TAG & Omega, but that is just me.

walk around jewelry stores and ask to see various models, try them on, they may look or feel completely different then you might expect. Ask questions like why a certain watch is more expensive then another, ask about their features; helium release valve (not that you need it), tachometer, water resistance...

Check out the Rolex Air King.  I got one about 6 years ago after going to the jewelry store intent on getting a Tag.  They're definitely pricier than the Tag's but Rolex's have a look that's timeless.  Most of the Tag's looked like I'd get sick of them after a year or two.  I still love staring at the Rolex and appreciating it's quality and good looks.

BTW, make sure you get something with a sapphire crystal.  They're almost impossible to scratch...and you'll appreciate that 5 years down the road.

Also, I'm not sure what your price range is.  The Air King was a stretch at the time and I've seen many other watches I've liked in much lower and much higher price ranges since getting this one.  Take the time to shop around and make sure you love what you're getting.

 Hope this helps!

If you are looking at Hamiltons, check out Fortis and Sinn.  Very few people know about Sinn, but it is a really nice german watch of higher quality that the others.  Tag would be another options such as the Carrera, but with Tag, you pay for name over quality.
